Young people are the group often understudied in the informal care story. Young family caregivers are children growing up in a family where, for example, one of the family members is needy and where they take on caregiving responsibilities.
Young family caregivers are characterized by the fact that they often have tasks and responsibilities that are not appropriate to their age and development. In this regard, they are often a hidden group. They do not see themselves as informal caregivers and do not reveal their concerns. And get into trouble at school, for example, or feel gloomy.
Young family caregivers can get help. For example, from the mentor at school, but also from youth work and informal care support in Oudenbosch.
Tips for young family caregivers:
- Discuss your situation at school
- Find support
- Keep doing fun things
- Find peers on

Unfortunately, a lot of young people are not aware of the fact that they are informal caregivers or that they find this term too negative to feel comfortable with and identify with. To make young people aware of what a caregiver actually is and that they might be one themselves, Surplus has launched the MEDEMOGELIJKMAKERS campaign.
